A Large Gas Import Terminal Is Planned To Be Built To Tornio

17.12.2012

Northern Finland’s industrial companies are planning a large liquefied natural gas (lng) import terminal to Tornio, Finland. Outokumpu, Rautaruukki, EPV Energia and Swedish mining company LKAB are behind the Tornio Manga lng project.

The investment decision is going to be executed in 2013. If actualized, the distribution of gas from Tornio terminal would start in 2016. Estimated cost of the project is € 100-150 million. Motivator for the large investment is large energy demand and the EU sulfur directive coming into force in 2015. The directive restricts the sulphur content of fuel used in the shipping industry to 0.1 percent in the Baltic Sea. Sufficient gas stock could offer liquefied natural gas to fuel cargo vessels operating in the Bay of Bothnia. (Source: www.tekniikkatalous.fi ,10.12.2012)
