There is a plan to upgrade Finland's data transfer capacity with a new data cable. The idea is to improve Finland's competitiveness in ICT and digital services, as well as encouraging companies to base their data centres in Finland.

At the moment the plan is to set the high capacity cable directly from Finland to Germany. Nowe the data transmission to and from Finland goes through Denmark and Sweden.

The cost of this project is estimated at around € 100 million. Finland will be paying one third of the sum and the same amount will be paid by institutional investors. The remainder is left for private companies. The project is planned to be implemented in 2015. (Source: http://yle.fi, 11.12.2013)
