Finnish Space Technology On Board Rosetta And Philae

11.11.2014

The Finnish Meteorological Institute has designed and produced parts to the robotic space probe Rosetta and robotic lander Philae, which is supposed to land on the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 12th of November. The Institute has been responsible of the lander’s PP-probe, which will measure water content as well as four other instruments measuring the dust and plasma environment on the comet. Also the lander Philae’s mass storage device was built by the Meteorological Institute.

The project has contributed to the Finnish industry by opening doors for subcontractors and bringing attention to the Finnish high tech know-how in the European forums. The Finnish defence and space industry company Patria has designed and produced two electronic power distribution units and the structure of the probe in Tampere and Jämsä. The space probe's electronics were especially demanding because of long flight time and demand for durability. (Source: www.tekniikkatalous.fi, 5.11.2014)
