Tampere Region Will Build A Massive Water Treatment Plant

03.01.2017

Municipalities in the Tampere region will build a huge water treatment plant to Sulkavuori which will process all the area's waste waters. It is estimated that the plant will cost €310 million, construction will start in 2019 and it will be completed by 2023-2024. Municipalities involved in the project are Kangasala, Lempäälä, Pirkkala, Tampere, Vesilahti and Ylöjärvi, with a total population of 430 000 people.

The plant will be built into bedrock cave spreading to an area of seven hectares and reaching below to 40-60 meters. Underground construction will increase the plant’s operational reliability and decrease environmental as well as smell impact. Only silt processing building and burning facility, administration building, switchboard, ventilation and flue gas pipes will be on the surface. There is also a place reserved for a biogas plant.
