Turku Shipyard To A New Owner And An Order Of Two Cruise Ships Published

20.08.2014

A German company Meyer Werft has bought 70 % share of STX’s Turku shipyard and confirms an order of two cruise ships from the shipyard for TUI Cruises. The rest of the shares are owned by the Finnish government. The value of the order rises up to a billion euros and the cruise ships will be finished during 2016 and 2017. Finnish shipyard industry experts are happy that Finnish shipbuilding will stay in Turku, as the future of the shipyard has been uncertain. The purchase and order confirmation also mean work for the subcontracting companies in the region.

Finnish maritime industry is most famous for building luxury cruise ships, but the companies in the field build also icebreakers and vessels for research purposes. The sector employs 21 000 people as well as designs and repairs ships, manufactures LNG-engines and offshore structures. (Source: www.tekniikkatalous.fi, 4.8. & 5.8.2014)
